  • Elizabeth was a wife and mother of five children in upper class New York.
  • After her husband's death, she converted to Catholicism. She founded a religious community, opened a parish school, and established an orphanage.
  • In 1821, Elizabeth died at age 46. She became the first American-born citizen to be canonized.
